The neutral cigarette pack, good idea?

We are all informed that cigarette packages no longer have any brand names on them. Today, the law obliges manufacturers to sell their cigarettes in neutral packaging.

According to BFM Business, cigarette sales are declining but at the normal rate observed for years. The neutral package had NO impact on sales or smoking prevention.

Looking at the latest decreases and increases in tobacco consumption, it is simple:

Decrease in consumption during a price increase (fall of 30% between 2005 and 2013).

Increase in consumption in the first quarter of 2016 when borders were closed, following the attacks of November 2015.

It soon became clear that price increases had a direct impact on cigarette sales.

The example of Australia, which brought the neutral package into force in 2012, is biased, because the reason why tobacco consumption actually fell sharply is that the neutral package was accompanied by a 25% tariff increase.
